We all love lather. Not just in our soap, either. We love everything from our toothpaste and shaving cream to laundry detergent to get nice and foamy.
Now, the bad news. Sulfates are what most manufacturers use to make soap foam. And sulphates aren’t natural, or good for your skin. Here’s why.
A KNOWN IRRITANT
Sulfates are a known irritant to human skin, and have been scientifically proven to dry out and damage fine hair. The Journal of the American College of Toxicology writes that sulfates are considered safe in concentrations below 1 percent or when used for short periods of time. Any concentration over 2 percent will cause some degree of skin irritation.
Liquid shampoo typically contains (drumroll, please) up to 15 percent! Shampoo bars up to 90%!!!
THE INCONVENIENT TRUTH ABOUT SULFATES
Sulfates make your body vulnerable to other chemicals which your skin cannot protect itself from. That’s because they remove your skin and hairs’ natural protective barrier.
By stripping your skin and hair of their natural oils, sulfates cause skin irritation, itchiness, hives, and redness, and leave your hair dry and frizzy.
But that’s not all. Sulfates also damage the environment. For more on that, click this story.
GO WITH THE HIPPO
So that’s the bad news. But happily, there’s an answer. BEBA.
BEBA Botanica soaps aren’t made with sulfates. Period.
BEBA Botanica Hippo Soap is handmade using the natural saponification process, and as such is completely detergent free. Our luxury vegan soap bars are crafted using high quality vegan oils and butters, in both hot process as well as cold process methods.
BEBA Botanica Shampoo Bars are formulated using a combination of the plant-based cleansers for maximum efficiency and minimum impact. Again, they’re sulfate free.
Unlike other formulators of shampoo bars, our products are formulated with the highest quality, gentle, biodegradable surfactants.
The surfactants we use in our shampoo bars are ALL naturally derived, sustainable and biodegradable.
- Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) is an extremely gentle natural biodegradable surfactant derived from Coconut Oil. (Ecocert approved)
- Decyl Glucoside is a mild plant based biodegradable non-ionic surfactant, suitable for sensitive skin and all hair types. Derived from coconut and corn-starch (glucose) it is sustainable and 100% renewable. (Ecocert approved)
- Cocamidapropyl Betaine (CAPB) is a natural gentle biodegradable ampholytic surfactant made from coconut oil. (Ecocert approved). Note: This ingredient was initially identified as an allergen, but it was later discovered that the toxins identified were as a result of bad manufacturing practise and not from the CAPB itself. We only source the purest ingredients from ethical reputable sources. Pure CAPB is safe and non-toxic.
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSa) is a gentle biodegradable surfactant with a pH of between 5-7.5, it is a mild cleanser effective at removing surface oil, dirt and bacteria without drying or irritating sensitive skin. (Ecocert approved)
BEBA Botanica leaves your skin and hair beautifully cleansed, nourished and protected. Our zero-waste skincare and haircare are sustainable, ethical and fair trade, and packaged in biodegradable packaging.
We make a difference - and we don’t make you wash in sulfates!
